Bio-Based Plastics in Practical Application

The Create innovation cluster supports companies in successfully transferring bio-based plastics and composites into industrial practice. The network is hosting its first symposium on November 10, 2025. The network brings together more than 60 players along the entire value chain – from raw material suppliers to processors and recyclers – in northern Bavaria and beyond. The goal is to successfully introduce bio-based polymers, additives and fillers into industrial practice. Experts from the fields of science, communication and marketing are also contributing.

On November 10, 2025, Create will hold its 1st symposium at SKZ in Würzburg, Germany. The conference will bring together representatives from science, industry and politics and provide a compact overview of current topics, technologies and market opportunities for bio-based plastics. The programme includes keynote speeches, a pitch session with innovative solutions from the network and a panel discussion on how bio-based plastics can be positioned between market requirements and sustainability.

A special focus will be placed on the expert forums, which will highlight five key topics related to bio-based plastics: material development and processing, sustainability assessment, chemistry of renewable materials and additives, closing the loop through biomass as a raw material and compostability, as well as market access and best practices. The forums will be offered in two rounds so that participants can choose several focus areas. The symposium will be complemented by laboratory and technology tours at SKZ, an exhibition and an evening programme for professional exchange. Participation is free of charge.

Practical exchange in expert forums

"Our expert forums give participants the opportunity to delve deeply into the relevant topics in small groups and actively shape the discussion," emphasises Philipp Wohlfahrt, scientist at SKZ and project manager of Create. With this symposium an important step towards raising the profile of the bioeconomy in the plastics sector and accelerating its transfer into practice is taken. The focus is on the question of how bio-based materials can be used in an economically viable and ecologically sensible way – a crucial building block for the future viability of the plastics industry.

Create – Network for a sustainable plastics industry

In order to promote the sustainable use of renewable raw materials in the plastics sector, the SKZ Plastics Centre has been working since February 2025 with C.A.R.M.E.N. e. V., the Bavarian Chemical Industry Cluster and the Bavarian Environmental Cluster to develop a new innovation cluster for the plastics industry. Create is funded by the Industrial Bioeconomy funding programme of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE).
