DVS Competition “Jugend schweißt” (Young Welders)

DVS Competition “Jugend schweißt” (Young Welders)

What is “Jugend schweißt” all about?

“Jugend schweißt” signifies enthusiasm for welding, applying technical knowledge and practical skills, overcoming stage fright, and competition against and with others. In theory and practice, everything revolves around four welding methods or manual welding processes: gas welding (process 311), manual arc welding - also known as E-Hand welding (process 111), tungsten inert gas welding - also known as TIG welding (process 141) and metal active gas welding - also known as MAG welding (process 135). It goes without saying that there is full compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations.

The participants compete against each other in performing four welding processes. Beginning at district level are various competitions sponsored by the DVS district associations (officially: the DVS district competitions). The victors qualify for competitions at the state level that are held by the DVS state associations (officially: the DVS state competition). The state winners qualify to take part in the DVS "Jugend schweißt" (Young Welders) national competition, where the most talented young welders in Germany are identified.

The difficulty increases at each successive competition level, in both the practical performance tasks and in the expert theory questions involving each welding procedure. The competitors' answers in the technical theory exam and the test pieces made during the competition are evaluated by an expert jury. This includes an external and an internal evaluation of their welds.

The "Jugend schweißt" (Young Welder) competition is one of the most important instruments for the promotion of young talent by DVS - Deutscher Verband für Schweißen und verwandte Verfahren e. V. (German Welding Society). What started out as a small event has developed into a significant series of competitions that attracts industry participants, organisers and companies every two years. When the world's leading trade fair SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN also takes place concurrently, there are even events at the international level, with the International Welding Competition.
