77. IIW Annual Assembly & International Conference Recap

77. IIW Annual Assembly & International Conference Recap

The "77th IIW Annual Assembly & International Conference" took place this year in Greece at the "Rhodos Palace Hotel and Convention Center" on Rhodes. The event brought together experts from around the world to discuss the latest developments and innovations in welding technology. Renowned speakers from industry and research presented their findings and discussed future trends in the field. Nearly 1,100 participants from 51 countries also had the opportunity to attend workshops and networking events to deepen their knowledge and establish new contacts. Overall, the "77th IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference" was a great success and contributed to advancing welding technology globally.

The Greek Welding Institute organized and hosted this unique event for the first time, encompassing areas such as industry and technology, academic research, training and education activities, as well as qualification and certification. The Cyprus Welding Institute was involved as a co-organizer.

Dr. Roland Boecking, Martin Lehmann, Marvin Keinert, and Philipp Loermann attended the event on the Greek island to represent "DVS – German Welding Society e. V.", one of the most important partners of this global community.

At the IIW General Assembly, Dipl.-Ing. Martin Lehmann was elected to the Board of the "IAB – International Authorization Board". He leads the "Education and Certification" department at DVS as well as the certification body for personnel, DVS-PersZert. He has also supported cross-institutional cooperation at the national and European level for vocational training in joining technology for years. The "IAB – International Authorization Board" oversees and manages the training activities within the IIW system and reports directly to the Board of Directors of the IIW.

One main focus of "DVS – German Welding Society e. V." is to promote young academics in the joining technology sector. The association is proud to support its young talents, the "DVS Young Professionals", within the framework of events organized by the "International Institute of Welding (IIW)". This year, the DVS sponsored 30 "DVS-IIW Young Professionals", making a valuable contribution to nurturing young talent and advancing research. Approximately 1,100 professionals attended this year's IIW meeting, including 350 students and young professionals, 50 of them from Germany. Each "DVS-IIW Young Professional" commits to giving their own presentation to an international audience in one of the many technical working groups. This year's meeting in Rhodes was the perfect venue for meaningful exchange and professional networking around the topic of welding.

This year, the Henry-Granjon Award of the IIW in Category C: Design and Structural Integrity was awarded to the German participant Aravindh Nammalvar Raja Rajan. Since 2021, Mr. Aravindh Rajan has been working at the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences in Gelsenkirchen in the teaching and research group for materials technology and joining technology under the leadership of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ghazal Moeini as a research assistant. As a cooperative doctoral student between the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) and the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences, he developed a micromechanical simulation model to predict the fatigue behavior of friction stir welded hybrid joints made of AlSi10Mg, which were produced by additive manufacturing and casting. The dissertation has now been submitted to RUB, and the defense of this scientific work is scheduled for September 2024. The Henry-Granjon Award is sponsored by the French Institute of Welding Technology.
