Double First-Place Wins for "Jugend schweißt" (Young Welders) Champions

Double First-Place Wins for "Jugend schweißt" (Young Welders) Champions

From October 24 through 30, 2024, the international welding competition "ARC Cup" took place in China. Representing Germany were the four winners of the 14th DVS national competition "Jugend schweißt" held at the SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN trade fair in Essen last year: Dave Schedemann, Hannes Mielmann, Christoph Müller and John Block. Hannes Mielmann and John Block secured first place in their respective disciplines.

Young welders from around the world competed in various events. Nearly 100 teams with approximately 300 aspiring welders from India, Singapore, China, Mongolia, Germany and Vietnam gathered in Beijing and Gu’an, Hebei Province, to showcase their welding skills. They are skilled in manual arc welding, tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, gas metal arc welding and gas welding.

Each young welder competed in their respective discipline. Hannes Mielmann clinched first place in tungsten inert gas welding, while John Block secured first place in his group for gas welding. The ARC Cup also included tournaments for robotic welding and virtual welding training systems. In addition to the competition, the German participants had the opportunity to gain cultural insights into China. The program included visits to cultural landmarks such as the Ming and Qing dynasty imperial palaces in Beijing, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built between 1406 and 1420.

The DVS (German Welding Society) organizes the "Jugend schweißt" competition every two years to support young welders aged 16 to 23. Participants first compete at the local level within DVS district associations. From there, they advance to state-level competitions, where finalists are selected for the national finals. The most recent national competition took place in September 2023 at the leading trade fair SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN 2023 in Essen, where the best welders from all federal states met. The four finalists then competed in the ARC Cup 2024 in China.

Representing DVS at the ARC Cup were team leaders Marvin Keinert, M.Sc., from DVS e.V., and Marco Brietz from the Schweißtechnische Lehranstalt Magdeburg GmbH, providing support and organization for the team.
