Prof. Thomas Böllinghaus Elected as President of the IIW
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Böllinghaus from the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is the new President of the International Institute of Welding (IIW), the world's leading association in the field of welding technology. His election was confirmed at the 76th annual meeting of the IIW in Singapore. He was previously Vice-President and Treasurer of the IIW.
Prof. Böllinghaus, who heads the Department Component Safety at BAM and has himself conducted intensive research on various aspects of welding technology, wants to achieve an even more intensive connection of research and development with training and teaching in the IIW during his three-year term of office. In addition, he plans to internationalize the IIW on a broader basis, especially in the countries of Africa and South America. At BAM and its predecessor institutions, the focus has been on welding and joining technologies for about 100 years. Current research focuses on welding challenges posed by energy carriers such as hydrogen or ammonia in connection with the transition to climate neutrality.
