Self-Sharpening Abrasive Grains

Self-Sharpening Abrasive Grains

Rhodius goes with the grain for its cutting/grinding discs: with the new high-performance line Ceramicon, the manufacturer is meeting users’ demands for effective and long-lasting solutions. At the heart of the innovation is a ceramic grain with a complementary binder. This ensures a grain can fracture repeatedly before it is used up and releases the next grain. Thanks to this carefully controlled fracture process, new, sharp cutting edges are continually created, ensuring superior working results and maximum stock removal. This is especially useful in metal construction: setup times are minimised while increasing cost-effectiveness.

From extra-thin cutting discs, grinding discs and flap discs to abrasive belts and fibre discs, Rhodius has now equipped the majority of the products in its catalogue with this innovative abrasive grain, which is a standard aluminium oxide grain treated using a special process and embedded into a stable binder. The result is a hard, brittle, sharp-edged and highly aggressive cutting grain that only breaks free of the binder once completely consumed.

Less force required – more time saved

On average, conventional aluminium oxide grain fractures three times, but the ceramic grain fractures continuously. “This fracturing process means the disc re-sharpens itself continuously, ensuring a longer service life,” says Rhodius Applications Engineer Markus Schraivogel: “This produces really excellent results when combined with a high-power machine.” The cutting edges created by the deliberate fracturing of the grain are like freshly whetted blades that cut quickly and cleanly through the metal. Users can use less force while also saving time.

These properties are especially beneficial in the pipeline, container and tube construction industry, where users are confronted with several different, highly demanding, tasks. The "RS480 Pipeline Extended" does not have a fine-grain top layer. This means the coarse ceramic grit is available for face grinding or surface grinding right from the start, even when used at a 90° angle. The controlled fracture process repeatedly produces new, sharp cutting edges that ensure the best cutting results and maximum stock removal. In addition to oSa (organisation for grinding tool safety –  Orgnaisation für die Sicherheit von Schleifwerkzeugen)- certification, the new RS480 pipeline extended with Ceramicon technology is manufactured in accordance with EN 12413, which applies specifically to this area of application.

Rhodius is at Fabech, Booth W2789.
